In addition to amazing archeological sites, there are multiple natural wonders scattered through out the Riviera Maya. For example the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve near Tulum. Sian Ka’an is an ecotourism and educational center, and it serves as a model for sustainable development in sensitive tropical ecosystems. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve covers over 5,200 square kilometers and it is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean being declared a federal reserve in 1986. Located just south of the Tulum Ruins, the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is located on the East Coat of the Yucatan Peninsula. Known for its unique environment it consists of tropical forests, mangroves, marshes, and lagoons, as well as marine habitats and freshwater cenotes. It is home to over 100 known mammal species, 336 known bird species, and it is a prominent nesting site for sea turtles. The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a must do if you would like to get off the beaten path, and experience a true natural wonder. You can arrange tours for groups, wildlife and bird watching, fishing, kayaking, and scuba diving. Please note that this is an ecologically sensitive area and use only biodegradable sunscreens and repellents when visiting the reserve.
As the third largest protected area in Mexico, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve comprises 1.3 million acres of tropical ecosystemsin the State of Quintana Roo. Consisting of lowland forest, flooded savannas, mangroves, and a portion of the world's second largest coastal barrier reef-- the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef--the Reserve is home to 800 plant species and provides habitat for 350 species of birds, as well as jaguar, puma, ocelot, spider and howler monkeys, crocodiles, and many types of turtles. Additionally, the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is home to 23 different archaeological sites of pre-Columbian culture. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve was included on the list of the UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in 1997.
Community Tours Sian Ka'an is the only locally-run tour operator working in the Reserve. Our guides are from surrounding local communities whose Mayan ancestors have made Sian Ka'an an historic destination - for its culture and its beauty. Our local perspectives provide unique tours that are both culturally informative as well as minimally impacting the Reserve's natural resources. That is why we were awarded by the Conde Nast Green List in September 2005 as one of the three top ecotourism destination in the world.
