Ek Balam, meaning Black Jaguar in Maya, is from the late pre-classic period and early classic period (100 BC-300 AD). It covers over 10 square kilometers, and has not yet been fully excavated but with 45 structures that have been restored and uncovered there is still plenty to see. Located north of Valladolid it is thought that there were as many as 18,000 inhabitants at the height of its civilization. Known for its strong trade in corn, wax, honey, and cotton, Ek Balam was thought to have been a major trading post to outer lying cities. One of its well known sites is The Acropolis which is the largest structure on site, and it contains the tomb of King Ukit Kan Le'k Tok', and he is believed to be the founder of Ek Balam. Due to the monumental architecture Ek Balam is thought to have been a very influential community, and due to the fact that it is not inundated with tourists, it is a site worth checking out.
